I wish to thank everyone for the special gift designed and prepared by Thomas Mathews from Hamburg and presented to me in Germany by Tom and Arnie. I have been told that many contributed to this gift throughout Europe to celebrate my 30 years in weapon training and teaching. I began martial arts in 1972 but saw the wisdom of learning about weapons in 1976 and have enjoyed meeting many special friends along the way.
Your gift of my Sax is the perfect present. Please read on about the EC Sax ;-))
A brief description about the Sax from Thomas. The Steel is Damasteel, the pattern is called Vinland based on ancient steel but is very high-technology.
These small selections of photos show the sword making process from start to finish but do not represent the many man hours of thought, design, research, effort and skill to craft a sword.
It is very difficult to fire-weld high alloy steel and therefore the steels are brought together in components, as powder, and placed into a vacuum oven and melted together.
The handle is made from the bone of an ancient horse about 15,000 years old. The hand guard and the pommel are made out of Stainless Steel but not heat treated.
The design brings together old fashioned knife or sword patterns with modern materials.
Many hours have been put into the bringing the steels together, then shaping, grinding, filing and polishing and then more hours putting it all together. Much patience, thought and skill has been put into the design of the Sax that makes this unique.
It represents the Escrima Concepts philosophy of combining the traditions and skills from the past and enhancing them for the needs of today and for the future.
I will cherish this special gift from my friends and members of EC always, it is a rare gift that means a lot to me and my family.
Special thanks go to Helen for putting up with Thomas spending many hours away from home and for making my son and I welcome at their home.
Thank you all again.
