        Scandinavian International  Open Tournament Results

The weekend of the 5th November, Bomb-fire Night in the UK (meaning plenty of fireworks) seemed a fitting start to the Scandinavian International Open Tournament. Several countries travelled to Denmark from the UK, Germany, Sweden and guests, friends and dignitaries came from Holland, Finland and Italy. It was a very social occasion. All Alliance Founding members were in attendance, Sifu Benno, Holland, Master Steve Tappin, UK and Dai-Sifu Allan Jensen, Denmark, with support from Grandmaster Brian Jones, UK. The event was hosted by Sifu Lars and the Tournament Director was Master Stephen Kinvig. With all the support from above and through their encouragement to send fighters and support a very good attendance was evident. The officials of the event did a great job for fighters and the members of the public and we thank them for their goodwill and hard work. Some tough fights were had and it was good that we had seasoned referees in charge such as Michael Moline and Chris Williams. The fighters all did well and fought with a great sporting spirit which is very special to us.

On the day of the finals we were entertained by Big Paul Leslie and Chris Williams (brave man) to a double stick exhibition, supported by Sifu Riis demo team and the Guild, Gert, Simon, Søren and Steffen.

Then the promotions (see below) then the finals. What can we say about the finals except, full of heart, hard working and often dynamic in a tough sport. It was really good to see every country won medals, which not only makes the trip worthwhile, but shows that the standards are up everywhere and becoming equal, which is due to the commitment of teachers and Founding Members everywhere. We must add that the women’s interest in Escrima is noticeable all around Europe and we were happy to see Joy and Sarah fight in what we hope will now grow into a better competition for women and that more will attend competitions next years. They deserve our support as they work hard for their right to fight. Escrima Concepts thanks everyone for their help, support, dedication and friendship, see you at the next Tournament which may be in Vanlose, Denmark in April 2005. Check future newsletters for more details.
